Online Poker Table Selection
A great feature about any online poker room is that there are so many tables to choose from. Especially if you are playing Texas Holdem, there is often 10-20 tables that you can pick to play at. Most poker players just sit down and play at the first one they see. If you want to maximize your profits when playing online poker, you must grab ahold of any edge you can get and take full advantage of it. All of those little things add up to give you a significant advantage over your average opponents. This is one of those small things that can make a big difference.
Establishing Your Playing Style
Before you can benefit from the option of being able to pick from many poker tables, you must know what to look for. You have to understand why one table could be better than another? In fact, you could be thinking to yourself right now that it does not make a difference. The first step is to define the type of poker player you are. What type of poker players go well with your playing style? These are all things to think about. If you are an aggressive poker player that enjoys stealing blinds, then you should play against a tight table that has a low flop-view percentage. If you are a tighter player who strives on getting paid off with big hands, you will need the complete opposite.
Choosing Tables
Just about every poker room's software has basic stats about the poker table in the lobby. The stats usually have the number of players at the table, the average pot size, the percentage of viewed flops and some other little things here and there depending in the site you are playing at. These are all the different things you want to look at. Once you know what to look for, all you have to do is find it and then take your seat. If the table is not open, then wait. It will be worth it. You could also get on the waiting list and then move on to the next best open table while you wait. If you are a multi-table poker player then get on as many good game waiting lists as you can and then wait for them to open up.
The other option is to actually observe the tables and see how people are playing. This takes a bit of time, but if you are really serious about online poker and you are playing medium stakes or higher, then it should be well worth it. You want to find a table where there are at least two players you know you can take advantage of and make money from. That is what you should be looking for.
After you have done this a few times it will be like second nature. It is also a good idea to take notes on players. Remember who the poker players are that you want to play poker with. Once you have done that for a long period of time you can just search for those poker players and sit at the tables they are sitting at. This makes your job much easier, but that could also be tough if the players are spread out too much. Still, it is worth testing out. Choosing your tables wisely can really pay off in the long run.
